maybe when i'm not so tired maybe you can step inside
Evelyn cuddled Gibbons close to her chest, stroking the enormous rabbit fondly. Gibby twitched his ears lazily, still a bit miffed that he had been left alone so long. "I didn't mean to stay the night," She cooed, feeding him a pinch of cotton candy. It was his favorite treat, even though Evie knew it must be hell on his digestive system. Gibbons lipped it up carefully, eyeing his owner reproachfully. Evelyn pet his head lovingly, her green eyes wide. "Poor baby, I'm sorry..."
Gibby heaved what sounded like a strangled sigh and ate more cotton candy, his large ears saddled pleasantly. Taking this as her apology acceptance, Evelyn tickled his stomach and continued to stroke the soft rabbit. "Aw, who's a good boy? You're a good boy!"
Gibby sighed again. Oh, the things he put up with for a few bites of fluffy goodness.
Evelyn giggled and played with his extremely large ears, kissing the top of his head lovingly. "Maybe we should get you a new collar, hmm?" Gibbons huffed slightly, twitching his left ear. Evie smiled and placed a handful of cotton candy in her mouth, sighing as the sugar melted on her tongue. Yes, this was heaven.

Stretched out atop the hood of his black Chevvy Impala in a flannelette t-shirt , jeans and with a white tiger cub snoozing peacefully beside him was Jack Miles’ idea of what heaven was. It would have been better if there had been some music blaring from the car’s radio but as it was it was currently broken, a fact Jack was most certainly not pleased about.
A bit of CCR would have been nice, although Stark wasn’t all that of a fan. There was another thing that wouldn’t have gone amiss too. Lately Jack had found his thoughts wandering to Evelyn Hunter, Orion’s assistant. The redhead was beautiful but so far out of his league it wasn’t even remotely funny. With a sigh he turned over and slid from the car’s bonnet, taking a lot of the resident dust with him.
It took awhile before Stark could be coaxed off of the warm spot he’d found but eventually the two of them were heading to the midway, the man hunched over with his hands in his jean pockets and the white tiger cub bounding alongside like an oversized kitten. Jack knew very well there was no use fawning over some girl but it didn’t stop him. Orion had probably seduced her already anyway; he was too late just like with every other girl. For some reason the mystique of a scrawny blonde magician was more alluring than an awkward tiger trainer these days.
Really he should be focused on his act and what to teach the tigers next and not some redheaded magician’s assistant. Jack huffed to himself as he walked stopping himself when he heard a familiar voice over the bells and whistles of some nearby side-shows. Peering around a conveniently placed caravan he spotted the very girl that had plagued his thoughts.
Okay this was his chance, she was alone well with a rabbit but no human company but what did he say? Already there were butterflies in the pit of his stomach and his heart was racing. Every inch of him wanted to run; he could face potentially lethal tigers but not this relatively harmless girl. He was ridiculous. With a deep breath Jack strode over to Evelyn, praying that Stark didn’t eat the rabbit.
”Hey there Evelyn, or is it Evie or something else?” Jack chimed up, laughing nervously. Shit he didn’t even know what to call her, off to a good start... not. For a moment he hovered above her awkwardly, unsure of what to do next. ”Mind if I sit next to you?” he asked nervously but still automatically didn’t wait for an invitation. He was so nervous his mind was about six steps in front of him. ”It’s a nice day, it’s going to be a nice night too by the looks of things,” Jack commented randomly, his pathetic attempts at small talk dying on the Kansas breeze.

all i ever wanted to do was to fall in love, just to be in love
Evelyn shifted the enormous rabbit into her lap and stroked his velvet ears, completely oblivious to the bells and whistles of the midway. Gibbons squeaked slightly as she pet his stomach, fiddling with the fluffy hair there. The huge rabbit soon began to relax and thump his back leg in pleasure, his head sinking low to rest on her leg. His stomach pooled around him, making him appear twice as large. All in all, Gibbons covered almost her entire upper leg.
Evie laughed and pushed him off so her leg didn't fall asleep. "Silly beast," She purred, fondling his ears proudly. Gibby sighed again and sidled up to her side, burrowing against her hips and collapsing again, presumably to sleep. Evelyn snickered and stroked his side, waiting for him to doze off.
She glanced up casually, watching the hustle and bustle of the midway. It was prime time; early evening, just when everything was starting to really get going. The midway was alive with patrons and circus acts alike. Evelyn sighed and ran a hand through her hair, her free one still resting on Gibby's stomach. It was then that she caught sight of the approaching pair, Jack Miles and his tiger companion. She smiled brightly at both of them, her eyes lingering on the white cub. "Aw, isn't he adorable!" Evelyn gushed, more to Gibbons than to Jack.
"Evelyn - but you can call me Evie, if you'd like," She said, still smiling slightly. Evelyn was completely unaware of the effect she had on him; it was apparent in the way that she went about her business. If she knew, she'd be using it to her advantage. "No, not at all," Evie added as to his inquiry, but he was already sitting down. She laughed softly, shaking her head a bit when Gibbons stood up and lolloped over to inspect the intruder. He extended his pink nose, whiskers twitching, before he threw himself on top of Jack's legs and laid down, settling down to sleep once more.
Evie giggled. "Don't mind him, he's just a big ol' fatty. He never hurt anyone except by sitting on 'em," She said, reaching over to pet Gibby's head. Gibbons twitched his leg, finding Jack's lap far more comfortable than Evelyn's. Evie scooted over to pet Gibbons easier, by association also moving closer to Jack. She scratched Gibby's chin, then glanced over at Stark. "He's adorable! What's his name?" She asked, that same sunny smile still on her face.

It was evident and written all across his face that Jack would be smiling for a long time to come. Girls had always been able to talk to him fine but when he had tried to talk to them he’d turned into the blabbering mess. It just wasn’t fair and what was even worse was that in the ring with the tigers he was the person he wanted to be. Confident, collected, witty, a completely different person. He supposed it was because tigers, in a strange way, were easier to get along with than people, especially people of the female variety.
”He seems to think so,” Jack laughed, roughing Stark behind his ears. The tiger was adorable and he knew it. The man swore the cub only rolled around and looked cute to con food off of the visitors. He was still too nervous to actually look at Evie, instead his green-eyed gaze remained firmly on the tiger cub who incidentally was eyeing the giant rabbit. Now that would be a disaster, Stark eating the rabbit, but looking at it, it was more likely that the rabbit would eat Stark. Jack couldn’t help but laugh out loud at the thought, how embarrassing that would be for Stark. Affectionately the man pulled the white cub in closer and began to gently rub behind his ears.
”So Evie what brings you to the midway this fine evening?” as Jack as his question he was suddenly greeted with the rabbit’s pink nose and then its weight upon his lap. Okay that was more random than his comment about the day. ”I can see why, he is fairly large,” the man laughed and stroked the great rabbit’s soft fur. Stark on the other hand was not all that amused at Gibbons’ intrusion. He gave one pathetic little roar before trotting off to inspect Evie. It was only when Evie asked about Stark did Jack look at her properly. Her smile made him blush a deep shade of red and it took a few moments before he could answer her.
”This here is Stark, the tiger in training,” Jack remarked fondly, still absently stroking Gibbons across the ears. ”And who might this big friendly guy be?” he asked gesturing to the rabbit. He was still looking at Evie and noticed she had the most amazing green eyes.

Haaah! People! Goodie!
Stark liked people as a general rule. Well, most people. You had to exclude the shriek-y ones and the smelly ones, but overall they were a nice bunch. Tall too, but that didn’t matter as a lot of them eventually came down to his level at some point.
Today Stark’s Mom had decided to go socialise with a person they’d never met before. The young tiger dutifully followed behind his parent, jaw slightly open to cope with the Kansas weather, his blue eyes fixed on the duo that Mom thought fit to approach. If tigers could actually see red properly Evelyn’s hair might have been a great source of interest for him, but as it stood, he was more preoccupied with the rabbit.
Oh good Lord, what was that thing?
The young tiger was about to bound forwards to investigate when what little common sense he had caught up with him. A residual instinct perhaps to stop him jumping at something dangerous in the wild, but Stark slowed up and gave his Mother a long, hard look before approaching. What he saw was not heartening. Mother was being slow and deliberate in his movements, eyeing the girl with all his attention focused forwards.
Okay, that was new. What was it then? Was she dangerous? Or was the animal there with her prey? Could be. Mom kind of looked like Stark did when he tried to sneak up on the Trash Man. Was that what this was?
Before he could wonder any further, his Mother went and sat next to the girl. Well, that sorted that out then. If Mom thought they were friendly then he could preoccupy himself with the fat thing with the floppy ears.
With a fair degree of caution, Stark attempted to approach the creature. I mean, Lordy, it had to be bigger than he was and who knew how fast it moved or what it ate.
He didn't long to concentrate as Mom then pulled him closer and Stark had no choice but to put the rabbit in the back of his mind for a second. Still, he was all too pleased with the attention. With a happy noise deep in his throat, Stark turned his head to rub his forehead on his Mom’s side. The muscles of his Mother’s body were still tight and his fingers were more rigid than normal, so the girl or possibly the rabbit was still making him edgy and that in turn was starting to communicate itself to the young tiger. What was it about this girl, eh? Didn't make sense. If she was a problem Mom wouldn't be sitting there like that.
All of a sudden the creature moved and with what was practically a squeak of surprise, Stark leapt back as the giant whatever-it-was suddenly flattened itself on his Mother’s legs.
... HEEEEY!
Stark gave a rather pathetic roar of annoyance, shooting death glares at the rabbit. Nofair! He gave his Mother a pouty look, but he didn’t seem too bothered to have the giant fat thing on him so Stark wasn’t exactly sure what to do next.
Gah, fine! Two could play at that game.
Full of a determination fuelled somewhat by jealousy, Stark padded around with a bouncing step around Evie’s legs to put her between himself and his ingrate of a Mother. Who was this chick and why was she tensing Mom up, eh? She didn’t look dangerous. Curiously the tiger wandered up and lifted himself to rest his oversized paws on the girls shoulder to look at her eye-to-eye, a move that both let him have a good look at her and gave him a position of dominance over this mysterious stranger. Mom didn't like it when he leaned on people, but surely this was a special case.
Yeeeah, he’d work it out eventually. Give him enough time.

between you and i he could never compare to you
Gibbons sighed in a melancholy manner as Jack began fondling his ears, his back leg twitching in heavenly acknowledgment. Evelyn laughed softly and reached over to pat Gibby's head, glancing up at Jack and offering another smile. "Ah, he likes you - he only thumps his leg when he's really happy," She murmured, that same smile playing serenely across her lips. Evie leaned back against the metal caravan she had situated herself against, tilting her head to the side thoughtfully as he asked his question.
"Hmm, mostly to feed Gibbons - he really likes his cotton candy, crazy beast that he is," Evelyn laughed softly, glancing at Stark affectionately as he wound himself around his master. The connection between the pair was undoubtable, something she admired greatly. She liked that Jack was good with animals; furry creatures were always something she preferred as well, hence Gibbons. Evelyn acknowledged his blush with a teasing smile of her own, but she didn't call him on it - not yet, at least. She wanted to get to know him a little bit better before she got into the fun and games of things.
Evie giggled as he mentioned Gibby's size, fondly poking the rabbit's bulbous tummy. Gibby squeaked in protest but did not otherwise engage in any sort of physical activity. "Quite. He's a rare sub-species called a German Giant, and... well, he's quite giant," Evelyn said, waving a hand to gesticulate the matter. Gibbons heaved another pointed sigh, his ears flopping to the sides plaintively. "Ah, sorry old boy," She patted the rabbit fondly and glanced at Jack conspiratorially, "He's a bit sensitive about his weight," Evie whispered by his ear, as if it were a secret.
"Ooh, hello there big boy!" She cooed at Stark as he propped himself on her shoulders. Evelyn tickled his belly playfully, glancing at Jack with another coy smile. "Where does he like to be petted?" Evie inquired, completely serious. The girl liked to please; especially things that were fuzzy. With another soft laugh, she picked his paws off of her shoulders and placed them back in her lap. She stroked him from the crown of his head to the tip of his tail, the way she used to stroke her mother's cats.
Evelyn sighed and shifted closer to Jack, bumping his shoulder with her own before resting slightly on him. Evie heaved a dramatic sigh and fluttered her hand about the pair of animals that were ensconced on their persons in various positions. "What are we to do about these rabid beasts? I'm sure a nice trainer like you could whip Gibby here into shape in no time, though," She laughed lightly, petting the top of the rabbit's head. "Have him jump through flaming hoops, maybe?"

With a contented sigh Jack let himself relax back fully onto the side of the metal caravan. He was happy just to hear Evie’s voice above the sounds of the bustling evening around them. Thank God he and the tigers weren’t performing tonight and thank God that neither was she. Intently he listened to and watched the girl beside him as she chattered away. All sorts of criminal thoughts entered his mind as he watched the lights of the midway dance off red hair, red hair he would very much like to touch... Completely disgusted with himself Jack frowned and looked away for a moment. How could he think such thoughts? What would she say if she knew?
”I didn’t know rabbits ate cotton candy,” the man laughed, looking back at the girl with cheeks a deeper shade of crimson. Broad hands stroked Gibbons softly as Jack glanced out to the midway, biting his lip; a sure sign he was deep in thought. What was he doing here? For all he knew Evelyn was just humouring him but those smiles were pretty genuine. A fact that he positively revelled in. If he could without looking like a total crazy he would totally be dancing as of now but since that would be weird he’d have to settle with doing it in his head.
”German Giant huh? Yep he’s giant alright,” Jack nodded his head in enthusiastic agreement. He could have sworn the giant bunny was cutting off the circulation in his legs. ”Stark there is a Siberian Tiger, of the rare white variety and he enjoys a good scratch around the ears,” he informed proudly, leaning over to give the cub a pat and incidentally brushing against Evie. The touch of skin on skin made the man’s face burn and pull back quicker than was really necessary. ”Sorry,” he mumbled, smiling sheepishly at the girl.
But it seemed his apology was deemed null and void as Evelyn moved closer. Okay, panic time was now, running was more tempting than ever but something compelled to keep him where he was. Instead of hightailing it to the nearest caravan Jack’s eyes simply widened in surprise and his face felt like it was on fire. He was at a loss for words, any attempt to speak left his mouth doing a good impression of a goldfish.
”G-Gibbons would put all the tigers to shame if I started training him,” finally he found his voice and a shaky laugh to go with it. Taking a deep breath and mustering all the confidence he had left Jack inched closer to Evie, coming to rest so that his shoulder lay between hers and the caravan wall. Unintentionally his had came to lay quite close to hers, his rough palm brushing against her soft fingers. This time the man didn’t pull back although his heart thumped violently in his chest, he had to see what happened next, call it natural curiosity mixed with new found confidence.

if she gets nowhere in life at least she knows she's pretty
Completely unaware that the majority of his thoughts were centered on her, Evelyn closed her eyes and settled herself more comfortably on his shoulder. However, even if she knew, Evie probably wouldn't care. The girl wasn't egocentrical, but she knew well enough that boys and men thought about her often enough. Male attention was something she grew up; something she was well acquainted with and more than used to. It was a refreshing change of pace to have Jack, who didn't seem to know quite what to do with himself around her. Evie watched his cheeks redden with a bemused half smile, wondering just how red he would get if she reached out to touch his already burning cheeks.
Temporarily distracted by her own wayward mind when he spoke, she laughed. "Well, rabbits usually don't..." Evelyn trailed off, then stroked Gibby's velveteen ears fondly. "Gibbons here is a special case, but it's probably not so healthy for him." She accentuated this statement by patting Gibby's massive gut affectionately. "He's quite chubby, after all. Most likely my own doing," Evie said ruefully.
"Stark, eh?" She smiled and stroked the tiger cub's ears fondly. The feline purred when she did, arching his back and clearly enjoying the attention. "Aren't you a little love bug," Evelyn cooed, nuzzling his nose with her own. Another small laugh bubbled out of her mouth, sweet as the cotton candy that Gibbons clearly enjoyed. She stroked Stark's head and tickled him behind the ears again, turning to Jack after she finished fussing over the tiger. "He's terribly adorable," Evie murmured, then added slyly, "He must take after his daddy."
She brushed it off when he accidentally touched her, waving a dismissive hand. "Don't worry; accidents happen," Evie said, her eyes glinting playfully. No guy she'd ever met before had apologized for touching her. She actually kind of liked it; it was chivalrous and made her feel... important.
Evelyn laughed when he spoke of Gibby's prowess, shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly. "Maybe," She began, pausing thoughtfully, "But I think tigers are far more interesting than enormous rabbits," Evie finished, giggling and fluffing Gibby's ears teasingly. The rabbit sneezed a bit and looked at her reproachfully before going back to doing what it was he was doing before - sleeping balefully on Jack's thighs.
There was an awkward moment where she felt him shift, then his hand inch closer to her own. It reminded her of sweaty eigth grade dances and fumbled encounters behind the bleachers. Evelyn smiled at the feelings of nostalgia and welcomed Jack's advances, turning her palm over and twining her fingers through his. "I don't bite, Jack."

What Jack had thought was heaven before had to be scratched. This moment right here on the bustling Midway, on this evening was heaven. He had the prettiest girl he’d ever met sitting right next to him, really on top of him now, and she was flirting with him, or so he assured himself she was anyway. It was a fantasy come true or something along those lines except the fantasy hadn’t included a giant rabbit but he was sure he could live with that part, besides Gibbons was awfully likeable. The more Evelyn smiled at him the more confidence he found in himself.
”Stark’s got a thing for bribing any food he can get off of the people that come through here. He may look adorable but don’t be fooled by it, he wants whatever you’re about to put in your mouth,” Jack laughed, stroking the cub’s belly as he rolled in around amongst the fabric of Evelyn’s outfit. His paws had to be pried away though; his claws were a little sharp to be playing with clothing. ”Unfortunately neither me or him saw his daddy, oh you meant me,” it had evidently taken the man a moment to catch on to Evie’s meaning but when he did he blushed again but this time smiled at her and even laughed, keeping eye contact for almost two seconds, a new record!
”I don’t know, giant rabbits are pretty interesting. Everyone’s seen tigers before,” the man chuckled brushing one had over Gibbons’ velveteen ears. He’d never seen a rabbit of such gargantuan proportions before. It rivalled Stark in size and he found Gibbons fascinating next to the tiger. That’s what happened when you worked with tigers every single day, to others they seemed exciting and out of the ordinary but to Jack they were as ordinary as cats and dogs.
With his hand so close to hers Jack, like Evelyn, felt as though he was back in high school. He was acting just like the awkward teenager he’d been, like he did with any girl he liked. He opened his mouth to say something along the lines of sorry again when she proclaimed she didn’t bite but what Evie did next made him stop and stare at his hand in awe. There before him were Evie’s fingers intertwined with his. Zealously he squeezed her hand in his and smiled softly at the girl beside him, cheeks that rivalled the colour of her hair.
If he had been shocked at Evie’s actions Jack was about to get a shock from his own. Without even thinking the man shifted himself so that the girl was leaning closer to his face and brought his free hand up to gently cup one of her cheeks. They were so warm to the touch and so soft, like nothing he’d ever felt before. His heart danced to the beat of some unheard music as his green eyes gazed into hers. The rush of blood was all he could hear as the pace quickened from nerves. His felt lightheaded as he leaned in and caught Evelyn’s lips with his own.

Hee! Okay, the girl was definitely not so bad after all. She gave pats! And scratches!
Stark didn’t ever protest to a belly rub, but the glee dissipated when she picked his paws up and moved them to her lap. Feeling miffed, he was about to go back again to resume his staring contest when her hand suddenly returned and Stark realised his new position was solely to get more pats and attention.
Sweeeet!
Stark arched his back into her hand, his ears went back and his eyes closed lazily. It wasn’t until people started stroking him that he realised he was itchy and he pushed into the strokes to get the right amount of pressure he wanted. Then Mom’s hand was there too for a moment, then their hands bumped and he jerked it back and Evie’s pats stopped too. Oi!
Stark moved himself onto Evie’s lap (ooh, warm!) to get a better look at the two of them. This was confusing. Mom was tense as hell again, and the girl was still relaxed and loose and really not being that threatening to warrant that kind of reaction. Mom wasn’t angry-tense either, so this was something new. Stark’s red colour-blindness prevented him to noting the shade of pink Mom was turning or he might have broken his own brain trying to figure out what was happening.
Okay, this had gone on long enough. Attention please!
Stark pushed his head under one of the girl’s now-idle hands. He got the reaction he wanted when the girl cooed and made some light-sounding, high pitched vocalisations that meant she was pleased and started scratching his head around the ears. Stark closed his eyes again blissfully and turned his head as necessary so she got all the spots he wanted, purring involuntarily and arching his back again. A little to the left. Yeeeah, that’s better.
When he brought her face closer to rub his nose Stark was pleased to note she didn’t have the acrid smell of too much strong perfume on her that burned his nostrils like some of the other women did. She was still wearing something, but it was softer. More pleasant. He would have tried to lick her nose, but her head moved away almost as soon as he got the idea.
He’d gotten distracted, and somehow one of Stark’s legs gave out under him and before he knew it, the young cub had flopped into a pile in Evie’s lap. He didn’t bother trying to get up, ‘cause hey, it was actually rather cushy there in the gap between her thighs, like a makeshift bed of sorts. Stark quickly wriggled himself around to be lying on his back, just in time for more attention from Mom. Feeling devious he tried to swat at his Mom’s hand with one of his paws, claws extended, but he realised his mistake when the attention stopped again.
Damn.
He waited for the hand to come back from one of them.
Nothing.
There were some noises he hadn’t heard before and feeling impatient Stark wriggled around to look.
... Hang on a sec, were they eating each other’s faces?
The young tiger watched, half in interest, half in confusion. Mom wasn’t tense anymore and both of them seemed to be getting a kick out of whatever they doing. Whatever it was, clearly it was some sort of bonding like when other animals rubbed heads together, or a new way of saying ‘Hello’ he’d never seen before. Stark decided that it wasn’t fair that he should be excluded. Feeling determined, Stark struggled to his feet, probably putting his claws through the fabric of Evie’s dress more than once in the process, then moved forwards and tried to join in by rubbing the back of his head on their chins.
